Best Basketball Shoes For Volleyball 2019

Best Basketball shoes for volleyball 2019

I feel it is safe to say that volleyball and basketball both have similar requirements and similar movements when being performed.

It is common practice when looking for new shoes to search specifically for the shoes that are related to your sport, for example if you play basketball you will search for basketball shoes and if you play volleyball you will search for volleyball shoes.

But as I said both volleyball and basketball have similar movements and therefore the shoes are designed to withstand the same forces and improve performance in the same areas.

Although it is a safe bet going with volleyball shoes are they are specifically designed for the game and think everyone will agree with is the selection available is very limited and personally I feel the aesthetics of most volleyball shoes leave a lot to be desired.

I switched from volleyball shoes to basketball shoes a while back and I have to say I have not looked back once.

With that being said here a list of what I believe to be the best Basketball shoes for Volleyball. Things that I have taken into consideration when compiling this list is comfort, functionality and lastly aesthetics. Aesthetics are listed last for a reason, although it is nice to look great when playing, your number one factor should always be are they comfortable when playing and are they built for purpose.

I understand that when playing sports everyone has their certain requirements when it comes to what they look for in a shoe, for example if you have a history of ankle injuries, ankle support might be up there as one of the most important aspects when you look for shoes.

Due to this I am going to break this article up into different categories.

That categories that I will cover will be as follows:

  1. Top 3 Most comfortable Basketball shoes for Volleyball
  2. Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with ankle protection
  3. Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with the most bounce
  4. Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with the most traction
  5. Top 3 Best Selling Basketball shoes you can use for Volleyball
  6. Best Budget Bargain Basketball Shoe for Volleyball
  7. Top 3 Overall Basketball shoes for Volleyball

Top 3 Most comfortable Basketball shoes for Volleyball 2019

Lebron 16

Best basketball shoes for volleyball

Coming in at the number 1 spot is the Lebron 16’s. The signature basketball shoe of the King himself Lebron James.

Not only do I think this shoe looks incredible it is built with premium materials which you can feel from heel to toe.

The Lebron 16 sports a zoom cushion setup which is effectively a full length zoom cushion. Strictly speaking it isn’t a full length it is segmented but the segments finish so shy of each other, you can’t tell it isn’t a full length zoom cushion.

As with most zoom cushion set ups it does have quite a bouncy feel to it but I feel this adds to the comfort. One thing I would mention is that the Lebron cushion setup leaves you quite high off the ground which can cause some instability so if you suffer from ankle injuries I would suggest maybe avoiding these for the time being.

The next thing that makes these shoes feel so comfortable again is the premium materials used. The upper materials of the shoe is constructed using battleknit 2.0 which is extremely soft and pliable and conforms to your foot really nicely. Unlike fliyknit it does not stretch at all which helps keep you foot secure and in place.

Again, one thing that is worth noting is that given the materials you would think ventilation would be good, but you do find your feet getting quite hot when wearing these, so if that’s something that annoys you, again, maybe steer clear of these or have another pair that you rotate between.

The shoes does run quite narrow to offer that secure snug feeling, if you are someone who likes a really secure fitted shoe you may want to go down ½ a size but otherwise I would stick to your normal sizing.

The shoe feels extremely premium however it does also come with a premium price tag.

CP3 12

Next on the list is the CP3 12. Now if you are a basketball fan or a sneaker head you may be surprised to see a pair of CP3’s on a list of top Shoes but honestly they have earned their spot.

The materials used on the upper part of the shoe are amazing quality and is one of the most comfortable and most premium materials on the market. This is even more a surprise given the price tag

The upper is constructed of using a flyknit material which feels extremely soft and pliable. The thing that makes this shoe ‘s upper so perfect is although it is super soft it still offers a certain level of support. The balance on the flyknit is perfect.

After hearing my speak so highly of this shoe, you may be wondering why it is number 2?

Well the reason it is number 2 is become in comparison to the upper materials the cushioning doesn’t quite live up to expectation. Now that’s not to say it is bad or uncomfortable because it is extremely comfortable.

The cushion is lightweight phylon setup with a zoom section in the forefoot for extra bounce. I would note though the zoom unit is very hard to feel when using and wearing but all in all the cushion set up feels great.

If you are looking to pick up a pair of these I would recommend shooting straight down the middle and going true to size.

KD Trey 5 VII

The KD Trey 5 VII (Sometimes referred to as the KD 357) is the signature shoe of one of the NBA’s superstars Kevin Durant. This is definitely a budget model when it comes to price being set at just $90.00 which is an absolute steal for the performance these offer.

These shoes are ranked 3rd in the most comfortable category and they strongly deserve this spot.

The cushion setup in this shoe is known as Nike renew and renew it has. It is believed to be a ‘renewed’ version of the react cushion set up however it is more likely a revamped version of dual fusion which is a dual density foam cushion.

This cushion set up leaves you quite low to the ground giving you a nice court feel and responsive step whilst maintaining a good level of impact protection. The cushion set up also offers a little bit of bounce which when coupled together gives a wonderful comfortable playing shoe right out the box.

The reason it comes in at the 3rd spot is because being the budget model the materials used on the upper are very basic in nature. There is no fancy tech used here which doesn’t take anything away from the comfort but it certainly doesn’t add to it.

Overall the shoe is extremely comfortable and offers great performance for the budget.

The shoe runs quite narrow and long so I would suggest maybe go down ½ a size if you want a more snug foot.

If you have a slightly wider foot I would suggest going true to size and using the extra wiggle room.

Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with ankle protection

When it comes to ankle support there is a lot more that goes into how well a shoe protects your ankle. Things such as traction, upper materials, lacing and straps all play a part in how protecting the ankle.

It used to be pretty common for anybody who suffered from ankle injuries to roll with high-top shoes however with improving technology all the time this isn’t quite so prevalent these days.

If you go with shoes that offer a low to the ground cushion set up but that have large outriggers and a wide footbed you shouldn’t have any issues with stability.

As such these are the top 3 shoes of 2019 for ankle protection however please note unlike the above list these are not in any particular order.

Kyrie 5

The kyrie 5 is the signature shoe of the top point guards in the NBA Kyrie Irving.

The kyrie 5 has a solid rubber sole with different traction sections the somewhat mimic the all seeing eye shape. The rubber traction in each of these eyes faces a slightly different angle and direction to aid with traction control in various movements.

The soles do take a little while to break in and it is recommended that if playing on a dusty court you wipe quite regularly, but once broken in the traction on these guys is very good and allows you to feel confident when reacting and changing direction.

The next thing that allows the Kyrie 5 to offer good ankle protection is the low profile cushion setup used. The cushion setup used is the zoom turbo which although takes a while break in offers nice comfort which little bounce allowing you to feel stable and secure to the ground. With that being said the heel compression isn’t the best so make sure when landing, you land softly and correctly on your toes.

Moving onto the materials the Kyrie sports and EM Material which out of the box is very stiff but once broken in becomes very soft.

The EM material although thin and soft once broken in does still keep your foot secured. The Kyrie also has a flytrap on the lace. The purpose of this was to allow the cables to be tightened and really strap your foot into place however in reality it doesn’t quite live up to the concept. With that being said, it does allow the flywire cables to be tightened up a lot more which you really feel on the lateral side. This really helps lock you foot in place and prevents that ankle rolling.

Moving upwards the top of the shoe is quite stiff by design which offers great lateral containment.

Add all of the above things together and you have a fantastic shoe that allows you to feel secure and low to the ground whilst offer nice comfort.

The shoe is a little narrow but for the most part in runs true to size.

Alpha Dunk

The Alpha Dunk is the new and updated hyper dunks. Now before I get into the in’s & out’s of why this shoe is good in terms of ankle protection I would like to add a few warnings.

I personally would not highly recommend this shoe, that’s not to say it’s not good but there is lots and I mean lots of better options. The main thing that ruins this shoe is the traction. On a crystal clean court you will think the traction is fantastic but on a dusty court… this shoe should really with warnings. The sole picks up dust very easily and when it does you will be slipping all over the place.

On top of the dust being picked up easily it holds the dust very well and you will really have to break out the elbow grease in order to get it off.

So as a pre-warning unless your courts are pristine and well maintained I would avoid this shoe.

With that being said let’s get into what makes this shoe brilliant for ankle protection.

The Alpha Dunk has a very large zoom unit in the forefoot which has a large caged unit on the lateral side. This really helps locks the foot in place and offers great lateral containment which prevents the ankle rolling. The rest of the cushioning is phylon which offers comfort but allows you to be quite low to ground again increasing that stability.

The upper material is a ‘re-engineered’ flyknit. Realistically it is just like any other flyknit but it does have a like a plastic coating over the top which leaves a rough feeling material to touch.

Likely you don’t notice it on foot. The material again conforms to your foot and offers a nice lockdown feeling for stability. The ankle guard comes up nice and high offer a lot of stability when playing.

In terms of fit they have definitely nailed the sizing so run true to size and should be good to go.

Jumpman Diamond

The Jumpman Diamond is one of the newest basketball shoes from the Jordan Brand. Surprisingly, it is called a Midtop when really it is much closer to a high-top.

Starting with traction, it is extremely responsive and has a really good bite. I would say on a dusty court it does collect dust a little bit but it can be wiped clean relatively easily.

The cushion set up is a zoom unit in the forefoot which offers nice comfort and a little bit of bounce.

At the back of the shoe there is two large caged areas both on the lateral and medial side which makes your ankle and foot feel really secure. One thing that is worth noting though is that due to these caged areas the sides and back of the shoe are very stiff around the opening so it can cut into your ankle bones and achilles a little bit. If you are sensitive to this then I would suggest you stay clear of these or make sure you break them in really well first.

Regarding sizing I would say these are outright not suitable for people with wide feet as they run very narrow. They are also a very tight fitting shoe which does give a little bit over time but if you are someone who doesn’t like super tight fitting shoes. I would suggest you go ½ a size up.

If you are not a fan of high-tops/ mid-tops my suggestion would be look at adidas shoes as you ideally want to go for a shoe with a wide base and low cushioning to improve stability.

Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with the most bounce

Now for volleyball this option is always going to be looked at a lot. Now there is still some speculation as to whether having a bouncy cushion set up actually adds any inches to your vertical or whether it is simply a placebo effect. But either way having a bouncy cushion certainly feels great.

Lebron 16

The Lebron 16 has already made an appearance in this list and rightfully so. It is extremely premium and offers so much in so many areas.

The Lebron 16 has an extremely bouncy cushion set up and already boosts you off the ground as you’re lifted off the ground with sole and cushioning.

As already mentioned the bouncy cushion setup is courtesy of the (nearly full length) zoom unit.

Some bouncy cushions feel soft and spongy but the Lebron 16’s feel explosive and springy hence why it is the clear winner.

Again this shoe is extremely premium in every aspect and the price reflects this.

KD 12

KD 12 is another signature shoe from Kevin Durant. This one carries a higher price tag than the KD Trey 5 VII but is it worth it?

Well the short answer is yes.

The main draw towards this shoe is definitely the cushion set up. The KD 12 features a full length zoom air setup which arguably still has the be the best cushion there is. When they get these things just right you can feel the air transferring under your foot and it feels extremely plush.

The technology and concept behind these shoes in unbelievable. They actually took the zoom air unit and but it directly the innersole. This means they have actually replaced the strobel board entirely with the zoom air unit. To avoid puncturing the zoom air unit they heat weld the two together.

Underneath they have a phylon midsole which to be honest you can’t really feel to much as it is heavily caged for good containment. Another clever thing they have done is core out holes in the underside of the shoe which allows air to be compressed inwards, rather than outwards. This just adds a little more feel and texture to that midsole phylon unit.

All this technology so carefully constructed together makes these shoes not only extremely comfortable but also nice and bouncy. Now it’s worth noting that they don’t feel springy like the Lebron 16 it is more of a plush spongy feeling.

Onto the fit, as with all KD’s they do run quite narrow and these shoes are no different. They run true to size but just note that they are very tight fitting and will take a little breaking in. If you really don’t like the snug fitting shoe but want to rep these you may want to consider going up ½ a size.

KD Trey 5 VII

Now you will get used to seeing these shoes pop up in this article as they tick so many boxes which is unbelievable considering they are a budget option. The thing that makes these shoes bouncy again is the cushion set up.

The cushion set up also offers a little bit of bounce, it’s not super bouncy like the 2 above but you will certainly notice it when playing.

Once again the shoe runs quite narrow and long so I would suggest maybe go down ½ a size if you want a more snug foot.

If you have a slightly wider foot I would suggest going true to size and using the extra wiggle room.

Top 3 Basketball shoes for volleyball with the most traction

Now traction for the most part is solely the responsibility of the soles however things such as curvature of the shoes also play a role. Below is our list of the Basketball shoes with the most traction so far in 2019.

KD Trey 5 VII

I know, I know. The KD Trey 5 VII is in the list again but honestly for a budget shoe such as this it just keeps ticking off all the challenges thrown at it. The traction on this shoe is absolutely unbelievable. It has an extremely aggressive bite when turning and reacting and has to take that number 1 spot.

In fact the traction is almost too crazy for the shoe, with the upper materials not being of the best quality there is a tendency to sometimes slip out of the footbed so just be aware of that when playing.

However if you want a shoe with good traction you need look no further than the KD Trey 5 VII

The KD Trey 5 VII features a deep wave/ herringbone tread pattern. The rubber is very durable even in the translucent version and it is easy to wipe clean of dust so you this shoe will not let you down.

Again the shoe runs quite narrow and long so I would suggest maybe go down ½ a size if you want a more snug foot.

If you have a slightly wider foot I would suggest going true to size and using the extra wiggle room.

Zoom Heritage N7

The Zoom Heritage N7 is aptly named as it features old school tech in a new model design. The N7 shows homage to Nike’s work towards the native americans.

Their is a variation of basketball called Res (reservation) ball and this is Nike’s tip of the hat to the competitors of Res ball. The shoe is built with durability in mind and it based on the intentions of the shoe I think it is safe to say they built this so it can be used outside with no problems.

Due to the foresight of it being used outside the sole on this shoe is unbelievably grippy and strong.

The sole is constructed of a very durable rubber and the tread has very deep grooves so you know this shoe will last. Although the sole does collect dust rather easily you won’t ever have to worry about wiping as i’m pretty sure this shoe will grip to an ice rink.

Now I’m not going to lie the rest of the shoe leaves a lot to be desired. That isn’t to say it’s not a great shoe but I think for the money there are better options out there. but if you want a shoe that has great traction and on top of that be suitable for both indoor and outdoor use this is the shoe for you.

The shoe runs quite large in both length and width so this would be an ideal pickup for some of the wide foot guys out there. If you do have a very wide foot it may be worth going true to size but for the vast majority of you I would suggest going ½ a size down.

Harden Vol 3

Harden Volume 3 volleyball

Now I know those of you with a keen eye will spot that this shoe was actually released at the very tail end of 2018 however many of the colorways were being released well into 2019. Now with that being said The Harden Vol. 4 has just been released and the tread pattern has gone back to the variant used on the first 2 models which is still amazing.

However the Vol 3 tread pattern is a traditional herringbone pattern and a lateral pattern in a small section on the toe guard. To cut a long story short this traction pattern just hits different. It is super grippy, extremely strong and very durable.

I am however a little bit biased as I love Harden’s but this shoe quickly jumped into being one of the top tier shoes of 2018 even though it barely made the cut off point, so it is safe to say if you want a great performer, with great tech and fantastic traction the Harden Vol 3 (or 4) will not let you down.

Regarding sizing as with all Harden shoes they run true to size or at least true to adidas size.

I have always found adidas shoes fit me extremely well when I go true to size however I do know some people find them either slightly too large or slightly too small. My advice would be to compare them to another pair of adidas that you own or can try on in store and you should be good to go.

Top 3 Best Selling Basketball shoes you can use for Volleyball

Now the first thing I will say is the official sales figures are hard to come by but from the research I have done and using logic I have picked out the below 3 noted shoes as being the best selling shoes of 2019 so far. The list is in no particular order.

Kyrie 5

I feel like there really isn’t much more I can say that about these shoes that wasn’t already covered above in the ankle protection proportion of this article.

The Kyrie 5 is extremely popular and a lot of this has to do with previous models being extremely comfortable and successful and also the shear popularity of Kyrie Irving himself.

Overall the shoe is great but it really geared towards having good court feel so if you like to feel the court when playing and having the best possible reaction time then the Kyrie 5 is a great option.

Again, although a little narrow it runs true to size.

Lebron 16

It is absolutely not a surprise that the Lebron 16 is among the best sellers. Lebron is one of the most dominant and skillful players the NBA has ever seen and he has amassed a large collection of signature shoes, all of which for the most part have been a massive success.

The shoe screams premium from the  way it looks to the materials used.

Starting with the sole it sports a hard thick rubber sole that is designed in sections. Each section has a slightly different tread pattern to adapt to all the movements you need. The rubber is very durable and doesn’t immediately break or perish.

Because of this hard wearing well designed rubber the traction on these shoes is fantastic and slipping is your main concern you need not worry in these. With that being said when tested on a slightly dustier court, I would suggest a gentle wipe every now and then as the tread does collect dust but it is easily removed with a light wipe.

Moving on to the next component and questionably the most important section in this category is the cushioning.

Unlike fliyknit it does not stretch at all which helps keep your foot secure and in place.

Nike PG3

First appearance for this shoe which may come as a surprise to some of you as year in year out the PG shoes are generally a solid option.

The PG3 obviously being the signature shoe of super star Paul George is absolutely brilliant this year although be warned the break in period is a little bit like going through a full boxing match with Muhammad Ali… Seriously it is brutal.

But once you get past that breakin point and everything starts moulding to your feet ohh boy what a pair of shoes this is.

Starting at the sole they have a nice thick rubber sole with a moon landing tread pattern which again once broken in a little grips really nice. Straight out the box weirdly the traction isn’t fantastic but play in them a few times and it won’t even matter if your court is dusty you will stick to it like glue.

Moving on to the cushion in the forefoot you have a partially unlocked zoom air so it has a little bit of play and movement. Once broken in they feel nice and bouncy.

In the midsole they have a light foam material which again until broken in doesn’t feel particularly soft but give them time and you won’t be disappointed.

Moving onto the materials there really isn’t special here they used a basic mesh material throughout with a few fuzed foam sections. One thing to note though is the shoes have little lockdown wings at the top of the forefoot area and they do a really good job of keeping your foot secure and in the footbed.

The support doesn’t have anything really noteworthy. Everything you need is there and that’s really all that needs to be said.

Regarding the size when you first try these on and get these they are really, and I mean, really tight. So again you will need to break these in a fair bit. But the break in period is worth it so make sure you get true to size.

Best Budget Bargain Basketball shoes for Volleyball

Originally when I first wrote this there were 3 shoes on the list. However 2 of them you have already extensively read about in this article and one of them in comparison to this shoe that aren’t as budget friendly. So I thought it would be worth dropping the others and giving you 1 outstanding shoe for a very reasonable budget.

Precision 3

The precision 3 is a budget shoe from the power house Nike.

This budget shoes is one of the cheapest basketball shoes you can get and honestly I don’t think it looks bad but you can see and feel the materials really aren’t premium.

The best way to think of this shoe although completely unrelated is the little brother of the KD Trey 5 VII which as you have already seen is a competitor to all the big boys throughout this article.

The traction on the shoe is really good and the rubber used is extremely strong and durable so honestly I don’t see you have any issues using this outdoors during summer tournaments.

Moving on to the cushion set up it is uu-named, undisclosed whatever you want to call it. It is not branded but something about it just really works. It feels amazingly comfortable, has good impact protection and is nice and firm yet bouncy.

With most budget models as I’m sure you have noticed generally the drop in cost creates a massive drop in material quality. The materials are very basic either using a mesh/ textile material while the full black colorway (NBK) sporting a synthetic leather. The materials feel and look very basic but on foot honestly they feel really good.

Overall for the budget you really do get a fantastic performed out of this shoe.

If you are on a budget but want someone that performs amazingly I would definitely be looking at these shoes. However the step up to the KD Trey 5 VII isn’t to steep so if you do have a little bit more money probably worth making the jump.

Regarding the fit these shoes are a little narrow but not to bad however they do run quite long so I would suggest you go down a ½ size.

Top 3 Overall Basketball shoes for Volleyball

KD 12

The KD12 is a fantastic shoe and takes the top spot so far in 2019. The sole is constructed of a very robust rubber that has nice deep grooves on the tread pattern making the traction amazing. Now the rubber is on the soft side a little bit so I wouldn’t recommend you use these regularly for summer tournaments but every now and then you should be fine.

I have already gone into great detail about the cushion set up above and as I said, it really is the main draw and feature of these shoes. It is an unbelievable cushion set up and deserves all the praise in the world.

Now as I said before the materials aren’t anything new or that impressive. For the most part they are a mesh material with fuzed panels.

However there is an unsung hero in the upper and that is the quad-axial flywire. This is a fantastic design and it’s main purpose is to lock your foot down and in place and boy does it do this well.

Most people talk about the full length zoom air unit but the quad-axial flywire really is the superstar behind the curtains.

Onto the fit, as with all KD’s they do run quite narrow and these shoes are no different. They run true to size but just note that they are very tight fitting and will take a little breaking in. If you really don’t like the snug fitting shoe but want to rep these you may want to consider going up ½ a size.

If you want to purchase these shoes click the below image

Dame 5

The Dame 5 has currently made no appearances on the list yet here it sits in my top overall picks for best shoes. Now although it doesn’t come in the top 3 for in any of the above categories that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the best shoes on the market.

As far as well rounded shoes go this has to be one of the front runners.

Starting at the sole, like most adidas shoes it has a thick, durable rubber in a herringbone tread pattern. The herringbone tread pattern in my opinion is one of the best and it probably best used on the Dame 5.

On the Dame 5 the herringbone pattern is quite spread out which better helps in preventing large clumps of dust getting caught in specific areas. The other pro to the spacing is it offers better durability.

Now it is worth noting that you need to break through the coating on the sole to really get the effects of the super grippy tread. So just be aware your first run out in these may feel a little slippy.

The cushion set up used in these in adidas bounce. The cushion is slightly more elevated than last year’s addition however you are still pretty low to the ground. Overall the cushion set up is really nice and soft yet still offers a little bit of bounce in your step. The cushion requires little to no break in time and will feel great straight out the box.

In terms of materials there are 2 different options I believe. The first option which is the white pair has mesh around the lower part/ forefoot area and then a really cheap felt wrap around the heel/ ankle area. The black pair has quite a low budget synthetic leather so in terms of materials really not very premium but then again the shoe doesn’t have a particularly premium price point.

That being said on foot the materials work and feel great so you need not worry. In terms of weight they surprisingly weigh almost the exact same weight so just pick the ones you like the best.

Now onto the fit. Nearly every pair of shoes that I have played in or owned that have been adidas have been true to size. However these shoes for some reason a little larger so I would suggest maybe coming down ½ a size to get a more secure fitting shoe.

If you want to purchase this shoe click the below image

KD Trey 5 VII

Seeing how much I have mentioned this shoe and how many times it has snuck it’s way into the top 3 on the category list I’m sure none of you are surprised to see it mentioned in the best overall picks.

Considering this is a budget shoe it is just amazing how well it performs.

The traction on this shoe is absolutely crazy almost to the point that it is too powerful for the cheap upper materials used. The KD Trey 5 VII’s deep wave/ herringbone design works wonders in each direction and is easily cleaned of dust with a simple wipe.

Again the shoe runs quite narrow and long so I would suggest maybe go down ½ a size if you want a more snug foot.

If you have a slightly wider foot I would suggest going true to size and using the extra wiggle room.
